Oliver Moragues’ Prensal Blanc Awarded 92 Points in the International Decanter Competition

In June 2025, the prestigious British magazine Decanter awarded 92 points to the OM Prensal Blanc from Bodega Oliver Moragues in its annual review. The rating comes from a blind tasting conducted by an independent panel of judges. The high score positions it as an “exceptional wine” according to the magazine’s scale, and for the entire team at Oliver Moragues, it is a confirmation not only that they are working in the right direction, but also of the great potential of Mallorca’s native grape varieties — something they have always championed.

This recognition strengthens the winery’s international reach, opening doors in key markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, and Asia. Furthermore, it brings visibility to Mallorca’s native grape varieties on a global stage and to the “petit vigneron” winery model — a milestone that reinforces Mallorca’s positioning as a still relatively unknown wine region with tremendous quality potential.

Prensal Blanc, also known as Moll, is a white grape variety native to Mallorca but little known outside the island. It typically yields fresh, floral wines with a high-acidity profile, ideal for youthful consumption. However, in the hands of wineries like Oliver Moragues, this grape shows great potential for wines with aging capacity, complexity, and longevity — achieved through selective harvesting and specialized vinification techniques aimed at creating what the winemaker refers to as “eternal wines.”

The OM Prensal Blanc is one of the winery’s flagship wines. It is a white wine that reflects the influence of the Mediterranean climate, with citrus and floral notes and a perfectly balanced acidity. These are complemented by subtle saline and bitter nuances on the finish, which come from the marine-origin soils of their vineyards. Careful viticulture, meticulous vineyard work, and innovation in the cellar allow the wine to retain its purity and authenticity — qualities that were internationally recognized this year at the 2025 Decanter Awards.

The Decanter mention of OM Prensal Blanc is not just a boost for Oliver Moragues but also for the local wine scene. This award should serve as an incentive for other Mallorcan wineries to explore the diverse potentials of their soils and microclimates, which could give this variety the complexity needed to be known and appreciated worldwide.

If for Oliver Moragues, the Prensal Blanc is still a little-known grape with great promise that is gradually gaining ground in international competitions, the same is expected to happen with other local varieties in the coming years. For example, another little-known white variety, Giró Ros, offers less lightness but greater complexity and volume on the palate. Among red grapes, Escursach brings freshness, lightness, and color, resembling those from the Beaujolais region. Callet offers finesse and elegance, Manto Negro provides red fruit and refined tannins, and Gorgollassa yields wines with wild, structured tannins, among others.

The award-winning OM Prensal Blanc and the other mentioned Mallorcan varieties are available at Bodega Oliver Moragues, which offers daily tours featuring a selection of wines paired with typical island snacks. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience the winery’s philosophy firsthand and to learn about the winemaking style and viticultural potential that Mallorca has to offer. Finally, it’s worth noting that this award adds to the one received in November 2024, when the same Decanter magazine granted 95 points to the OM Gorgollassa wine — once again demonstrating the tremendous potential of native varieties and highlighting the increasingly urgent need for the Mallorcan wine region to decisively return to its ancestral grapes, which have been cultivated on the island for centuries, and to move away once and for all from international varieties.

Visits and wine tastings of ancient grape varieties in one of the oldest Mallorcan Estates

Oliver Moragues Winery is located on one of the oldest wine estates on the island of Mallorca, owned by the same family since the year 1511. In 1998, the family launched a project focused on recovering native Mallorcan grape varieties and traditional bush-trained vine systems, returning to the roots of the island’s ancestral viticulture. The main idea is to keep the house alive, just as it has been for the last eight centuries, as one of the few remaining references in Mallorca to our history.

In this context, for the past two years, the winery has strongly committed to bringing these grape varieties closer to international visitors, mainly through winery tours and wine tastings. It’s a new wine profile that stays much more faithful to the island’s history. Starting in 2025, the winery will be open seven days a week, from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, offering guided tours of the historic house, the vineyards, and the winery. The experience concludes with a wine tasting of three or four wines made from native varieties, accompanied by tapas prepared with typical local products. These winery visits not only help visitors better understand the grape varieties but also allow them to connect more deeply with the terroir and the original wine profile of Mallorca. Red varieties such as Escursach, Callet, Gorgollassa, or Manto Negro, and white ones like Giró Ros or Prensal Blanc, exemplify the island’s unique viticultural richness. These grapes enable the production of modern wines focused on fruit, low alcohol levels, and soft, fine tannins from the very first sip. This is where our wines like OM Prensal Blanc, OM Giró Ros, El Galgo, Manto Negro de la Finca, and Rosé de Gorgollassa are born.

Visits and wine tastings at the winery require a prior reservation and are offered three times each day: 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM, or 2:00 PM. Our goal with these visits is not only to introduce visitors to local grape varieties but also to provide a fun and educational insight into the winemaking process. The guided tour concludes with a private wine tasting in our garden. There, wrought iron and marble tables, ancient bushes, the old well, and historic foudres (large wooden vats) create an idyllic setting for tasting. The tapas are prepared in collaboration with Forn de Can Salem, where chef Jaume of Can Salem has become known as one of Mallorca’s best bakers. We are fortunate to have him pair his food with our wines, turning the tasting into a journey through the island’s most traditional and authentic gastronomy. Typical pairings include Mallorcan vegetable or trampó flatbreads (cocas), meat empanadaspa amb sobrassada (bread with cured sausage made on our estate), and cream-filled cremadillos. We also offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, as well as alcohol-free tasting alternatives.

Without a doubt, a visit and wine tasting at Oliver Moragues is one of the most authentic experiences you can have in Mallorca to discover its traditional gastronomy. We also offer group meals featuring paellas and/or porcella (roast suckling pig) for groups of at least 10 people, served in one of our private rooms overlooking the vineyards. Around five thousand people visit the winery each year, and we’re proud that every one of them has had the chance—even if just for a few hours—to enjoy a 100% Mallorcan and 100% local experience. Copiar contenido limpio
